Not as good as ferries I’m afraid. And I’ve used both over the last 60 years. You can walk around a ferry, and the hovercrafts only ran in relatively calm sea states.

Oil prices and CO2 issues killed gas turbine propulsion in every form of land-based transportation. Turbine ships like Finnjet or even trains, they burned way too much fuel to be economically viable.

being raised in NY . the person who narrated this video had me confused . being in the USA navy at the start of Vietnam i did not recognize the ships name which he pronounced as ( or a scony ) instead of the correct pronunciation of ( O RISK Ka Ne ) which at the time the video showed the ship bell I then knew which aircraft carrier he had been talking about. this narration needs to be re-done with the correct pronunciation!

I think I can remember around 1970 getting the hovercraft from Southampton to Cowes IOW. I was only about 5 or 6 years old at the time. Hovercraft one way and hydrofoil the other. Also another reason for the Dover Calais hovercraft being scrapped was, the end of "Duty Free" cheap booze crossings.

Uneconomical to operate, most went to the scrap yard.😞

I crossed from Boulogne to Dover in one in 1974. It was fantastic!
